Sinus Lift Recovery: How Long Does It Take?

Sinus Lift Recovery: How Long Does It Take?

Sinus lift procedure is a method applied in cases where there is not enough bone volume for implant treatment. Especially when the bone density is insufficient in the upper jaw region, this surgical intervention prepares a suitable ground for implant placement by adding the right bone to the sinus cavity. Although it may seem daunting at first glance, many patients go through this process without any problems and can experience a comfortable recovery period when certain rules are followed.

The day of the operation is usually performed under local anesthesia or sometimes sedation. Pressure and various noises may be felt throughout the procedure, but full pain is not expected. Swelling in the facial area is normal after the operation and the so-called “hamster cheek” appearance may occur, especially in the first few days. Some patients report a slight tingling or pressure sensation during this period, but it is usually controlled with painkillers recommended by the physician.

The degree of swelling and discomfort may increase or decrease until the fourth day. Especially on the third or fourth day, there may be cases where the pain peaks, but after this stage, there is usually a rapid relief. At the same time, it is possible to experience slight leaks or a feeling of congestion due to the bone graft made during the sinus lift. Since there are stitches in the mouth, there may be a slight pulling sensation during laughing, talking or yawning. Measures such as elevating the head while lying down, keeping the mouth open when sneezing and avoiding overstraining the nose significantly support the healing process.

From the fifth day onwards, the edema decreases and a more normal appearance returns. In this process, it is very important to focus on liquid and soft foods, to take the medications recommended by the physician regularly and to pay attention to hygiene. After about a week, there may be no significant complaints other than mild pain. While some patients state that they are almost completely back to normal by the tenth day, the next stages of the implant application are usually performed after waiting for several months.
