Emax Crowns Treatment: Procedure, Costs, Benefits and More

Emax crowns are a non-metal porcelain with a translucent appearance, usually used in front teeth and made of lithium disilicate ceramics. In this way, it offers similar properties to natural teeth. The crowns are custom-made for each tooth and patient and the appropriate surface is prepared and cemented. Emax does not have an officially defined expanded form moreover it is a brand name created by Ivoclar Vivadent, used to represent a specific line of dental products, particularly those made from lithium disilicate ceramic and is primarily a marketing name.

Emax, Empress coatings and porcelain coatings can often be mistaken for each other. However, in short, Emax can withstand up to 400 MPa to 500 MPa pressure thanks to the properties of the material and it has the most durable type of all kind of porcelain coatings. Although empress coatings can withstand pressure up to approximately 160 MPa and Feldspathic Porcelain can usually withstand up to 60-120 MPa. As a result, Emax is at least 3.5 times more durable than other porcelain competitors, but it is still rarely used in applications that require bridge treatment with tooth loss. In such treatments, going for zirconium crowns may offer longer lasting use.

As with almost every dental treatment, the doctors carefully examine your dental condition and offer you suggestions when choosing Emax treatment. Depending on the condition of the tooth, its location and the frequency of pressure, a zirconium crown or other recommendations may be made. The treatment starts with a consultation and examination process.

In summary, recommended by your dentist, Emax restorations are popular for their aesthetic appeal, durability and natural appearance. With good oral hygiene, no attempts to break hard objects and regular dental check-ups, they can last for many years.

Emax Crowns Procedure

The procedure for Emax crowns is simple and typically involves several steps as outlined above. The treatment steps is as follows:

  1. Initial Consultation: The dentist will assess your dental needs in terms of decay, damage, or discoloration than take X-rays, and discuss the treatment plan. This step ensures that Emax crowns are the right option for you.
  2. Tooth Preparation: Especially in this method, only a small amount of tooth structure will be removed by the dentist to create sufficient room for the crown or veneer. Local anesthesia is used to guarantee comfort during this procedure. A precise model of the prepared tooth is created by taking either a digital scan or a traditional impression.
  3. Temporary Crown: A temporary crown may be placed to protect the tooth during the fabrication of the Emax restoration, particularly if the crafting process was outsourced and requires at least 2 week or request by the patient. If the teeth can be produced quickly with internal welds and tooth preparation and fixation can be done on the same day, temporary crowns are not needed.
  4. Fabrication of the Emax Restoration with CAD/CAM Design: The Emax restoration is specifically crafted with CAD/CAM technology using digital impressions. The final restoration is created by shaping a block of lithium disilicate ceramic, the material found in Emax, by either the dentist or lab technician. Afterwards, restoration can involve staining and glazing to customize color matching and create a natural appearance.
  5. Fitting and Placement the Emax: When the Emax crown is ready for placement, the dentist will remove the temporary crown which applied previouly, checks its harmony and color with other teeth, and then carefully paste it with strong adhesive resin. After, the dentist ensures proper alignment and checks the bite before the final curing.
  6. Curing: A special UV light is used to harden the adhesive, and securing the restoration in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can use the section below for questions about Emax crowns and the treatment process.

Do Emax Crowns Look Natural?

Yes, Emax crowns have a natural appearance. The opalescent white color of lithium disilicate ceramic closely similar to natural tooth surface, enabling the crowns to reflect light like real teeth. This is what makes Emax crowns ideal for front teeth, where appearance is very important. Furthermore, in contrast to PFM crowns, lithium disilicate is free of metal which eliminates the possibility of dark lines near the gum line caused by bio incompatibility in metal-based crowns.

How Long Do Emax Crowns Last?

Due to its high compressive strength, Emax crowns are distinguished by their extended durability. With right dental care, crowns may last from more than 10 – 15 years and factors for example diet, oral hygiene, and dental check-ups play an important role in the lifespan of Emax crowns. Even they are highly resistant to chipping and cracking, it’s still important to avoid habits like teeth grinding or biting on hard objects to maximize their lifespan. If these bad habits are not taken into account, not only your Emax teeth but also your natural teeth may be deteriorated.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Emax Crowns?

The advantages and disadvantages of Emax crowns are listed below. In general, the advantages are its use as a superior material in dentistry and its biocompatibility and appearance like natural teeth. The disadvantages are that it is usually a costly procedure, fragility in extreme cases and requires good dental technique & technology.

Advantages 👍

  • Emax crowns look quite natural because of its superior material lithium disilicate, it makes them an excellent choice for visible (front) teeth and usually used for front teeth.
  • They are highly resistant to wear, chipping, cracking and moderate chewing forces.
  • Being metal-free, Emax crowns are less likely to cause allergic reactions or gum irritation or coloration. Additionally, less tooth structure needs to be removed in comparison to other crown options.
  • They resist stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, and other food items.

Disadvantages 👎

  • Emax crowns may have a higher cost compared to other crown types like porcelain-fused-to-metal, as well as requiring advanced CAD/CAM manufacturing technology.
  • Emax crowns sometimes not be the best option for back teeth (molars) where extreme bite forces are applied frequently. Zirconia crowns might be a better choice for those areas due to their remarkable strength.
  • The success of Emax crowns depends heavily on the skill of the dentist and the technology of the manufacturing process. So it makes the treatment technique-sensitive.
