Just like natural teeth, dentures should be cleaned regularly and correctly. However, since this cleaning is done on sensitive materials, the choice of method is of great importance. Unfortunately, some patients try to wash their dentures in the dishwasher to save time or because they think it is more practical. This is a highly discouraged and harmful practice.
Dishwashers operate at high temperatures. This temperature can deform the acrylic or plastic-based materials that the prostheses are made of. Deformations, especially in the palate, can cause the prosthesis not to fit properly in the mouth, causing sores and chewing problems. At the same time, chemicals found in dishwashing detergents can cause discoloration and micro-surface damage to the denture surface.
These devices also work with a pressurized water spray system. This can create fine cracks on the surface of the denture, creating a favorable ground for bacterial accumulation over time. Just because a denture looks clean does not mean it is hygienic. The important thing is that it is both appearance and microbiologically safe.
Specially designed denture brushes and denture cleaning tablets should be used for proper cleaning. You can brush your prosthesis with warm water in the morning and evening and soak it in special cleaning solutions at night. This ensures hygiene and prolongs the life of the prosthesis.
Another mistake patients make is to use normal toothpastes on dentures. These pastes can scratch the surface of the denture due to the micro-abrasives they contain. Scratches on the surface can lead to plaque buildup over time.
If you have permanent stains on your dentures or if your own cleaning routine is insufficient, you should seek help from a dentist. Just like with natural teeth, professional cleaning is recommended at least once a year.
