As the name suggests, temporary fillings are not permanent solutions. These materials, used by dentists to protect the tooth and ensure the continuation of treatment in cases such as root canal treatment, fractures, or cavities, provide a short-term solution. However, the duration for which they can be used may vary depending on the type of filling material used and the patient’s oral hygiene.
One of the most commonly used temporary filling materials, Cavit, is gray or brown in color and typically remains stable for 4 to 6 weeks. After this period, it may leak from the edges or break apart. More durable temporary fillings made of glass ionomer or composite-based materials can last longer; they can be used for 2-3 months or even longer in some cases. However, this does not mean that the filling is safe. Over time, the risk of the filling wearing down, losing its seal, or falling out increases.
Teeth that have received temporary fillings after root canal treatment are structurally weakened. Unless a permanent filling or crown is applied, these teeth are more prone to breaking or cracking. Therefore, every day that passes with temporary fillings slightly increases the risk of damage to the tooth. Avoiding hard foods (such as almonds, nuts, and chips) and chewing with healthy teeth makes this process safer.
Although some people say they can manage with temporary fillings for months, this is not an ideal situation. Because even if the filling looks solid from the outside, it does not mean that its internal structure is intact. A leaking temporary filling can even lead to the need for root canal treatment to be redone. Therefore, it is of great importance to have the permanent restoration done on the date specified by the dentist after the temporary filling is applied.
Temporary fillings provide temporary relief, but they are not a permanent solution. If your appointment with your dentist is delayed, be sure to share your situation over the phone and request a check-up of your temporary filling. In some cases, a second temporary filling can be applied to extend the duration slightly.
